'Wrong Norma': Anne Carson, Simon McBurney, Ben Whishaw and Robert Currie
'Wrong Norma' is Anne Carson’s first book of original material in eight years, a collection of writings, as she puts it, ‘about different things, like Joseph Conrad, Guantanamo, Flaubert, snow, poverty, Roget’s Thesaurus, my Dad, Saturday night, Sokrates, writing sonnets, forensics, encounters with lovers, the word “idea”, the feet of Jesus, and Russian thugs.’
Fragments of several of the above appeared first in the pages of the LRB, as Anne’s work has for many years. What a fine thing, to celebrate this treasured association with a celebration of Wrong Norma that may prove as uncategorisable as the book. A lecture, a reading, a conversation, a performance: joining Anne is her ‘Randomizer’...

Johnson, author of the popular Substack ‘Dinner Document‘, was in conversation with...

I’m confused. Is a novel or a memoir? It reads like a memoir and the author speaks of it like a memoir but it’s called a novel. How is it fiction? The question about his use of vernacular and literary French is very interesting and lost in translation. I just finished reading Ernesto a 1953 novel by Italian poet and writer Umberto Saba who wrote it in similar way using the various lingos of his Trieste community but again lost in translation.

I congratulate those who (for many good reasons) choose not to bring children into this world. I am 62. I decided not to father any children at 18 (when I was living in Ankara, Turkey). I am proud that I remained vocal about my opposition to human population growth. For anyone interested, that feeling of smoking strong pipe tobacco is a lot like smoking pot the way it’s smoked in the UK/Europe. Mixing it (pot) with tobacco (the ‘spliff’) kills the psychoactive effect and gives this powerful headrush/nausea. It’s also kinda like smoking a cigarette when you haven’t for years.

ugh authors too full of themselves. Frances saying "im not interested at all in what Lawrence says about sex". How dry and insipid. I guess one experiences literature from within the context of ones own mind and experiences. Sorry you dont like sexx! the last commenter voiced the confused reaction of the audience, speakers just trying to show off their erudition than focus on the essence of what makes Lawrence an incredible writer

The only thing that I would disagree with her on is that we don’t have control over our destinies because of what happens to us, or that certain relationships will impact us forever. I come from an abusive home and have worked very hard in therapy to not live the life I was “destined” to because of all the pain and suffering I was experiencing. Of course it still impacts me, but I don’t think we are doomed to whatever life contrives for us. I think we have power over who we become to a fairly large degree.
